Research Donation
Is there any cost?
Are there any reasons someone would not be accepted as a research donor?
While many people want to donate their organs and tissue for transplantation, age, health status or cause of death may preclude this. Transplantation is not the only option for those who wish to be a donor. They can also donate to medical research and education.
Without medical research and education, advances in medicine would not be possible. The Alabama Organ Center has a very active research program. Organs and tissue donated for research may be utilized at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the International Institute for the Advancement of Medicine (IIAM), National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) or other reputable research organization.
The process is coordinated through the Alabama Organ Center like organ and tissue donation for transplantation. Donation for research can occur following the recovery of organs and tissues for transplant or as a research-only donor depending on the circumstances.
